GRAMMAR TIC TAC TOE

This game is my all time favorite. I've picked it up from a seminar and used it with my students for practicing asking YES/ NO questions. It can be used as an ice breaker, time filler, warm up activity, follow up activity. And the best thing is- you don't need any preparation. So, whenever the students ask for a game, I pull up this out my sleeve.
The procedure:
-Draw a tic tac toe grid on the board and ask the students to provide activities that you write randomly in the grid.(read a book, watch TV, do the dishes...)
- Tell the students they are playing against you. (They'll love it!)
- Depending on what you want to practice, you explain to your students that they are going ask you YES/NO questions about the activities in the grid(Can you...?, Did you...? Do you...?) and promise them you'll be honest.
- As in each tic tac toe game the signs are dots and crosses. Let the students decide if they get a point (cross) whenever your answer is "yes" or "no". So they should do some thinking connecting the activities in the grid and yourself- how will they win .(Can the teacher do all this things on the board- if you practice CAN; Did the teacher do this things last weekend- for past simple etc.)
- When you set up this, you start the game. Random students ask you a question usig the activity in the grid, you answer honestly and either they get their mark in the grid or you get yours.
-The winner is the first that makes a line or has more fields with their sign.

IT'S COLD- YOU SHOULD PUT ON A T- SHIRT (-:)

I used the weather and clothes vocabulary for this communicative game to practice SHOULD. I made two dice with the help of the great site for teachers- MES English.

 The rules:
- Students work in pairs.
-Each student throws both dice trying to get suitable combinations of weather and clothing.
-The student makes sentences with the pictures on the sides of the dice he gets. (If they have sun and sandals- It's sunny. You should put on your sandals).
- For each funny combination and a correct sentence ( It's cold. You should put on your T-shirt.)- they score one point.For each suitable combination and a correct sentence, -two points. For each incorrect sentence- zero points.

At the end, ask the students to write three of their best pairs of sentences in their notebooks.

Lyrics training

This is an interesting site where your students can practice listening, song dictation, fill in gaps. Choose from the large number of songs. My choice is the song "I'll be there for you" with some good lines for practicing superlatives.

Comparative and superlative with Excel

One use of Excel in language classes is for creating interactive crossword puzzles. Here are two more.

  •  Use the IF formula to make assessment worksheets where if the students answers are correct, they get points.
  • Use the drop-down menu for true- false answers.

Below is the PDF version of my Excel worksheets. If you want to try the full interactive exercises CLICK HERE.

Interactive crossword with Excel

When I first "met" Excel I thought it wasn't for me because Excel was all about Math calculations. However, I started exploring and came across Internet for classrooms, a site with excellent tutorials for teachers and Excel has become my best friend. Here is a crossword puzzle I made following step by step instructions from the site. I used the free puzzle maker to create the crossword first.

I like using poetry in my classes. I used this poem in the Halloween test for my six graders.I adapted it to get more verbs in present continuous tense.

My Halloween test

 My dear friend teachermarija and her post on Halloween test inspired me to try that in my classroom.So I put up this pre-test for my eight graders. I wanted to assess the relative pronouns WHO and THAT, the order of adjectives and the use of used to all that wrapped up into Halloween vocabulary.  I must say it was a huge success. As a follow up, I plan to assess these tests with
excellent= magic potion;
not bad= vampire bite;
 should try harder= skeleton bones

In for HALLOWEEN

It's the spookiest time of the year again. So, I decided to put a twist to the Mother Goose rhyme  The house that Jack built. I'm not sure that I'm that original, but my main purpose was "to kill two flies with one strike"- to present relative pronouns to my eight graders and to have a Halloween topic. So, this is my version of the familiar nursery rhyme.

I USED TO BELIEVE

I was looking for an idea for my lesson on USED TO when I came across this site. I used to believe is a collection of ideas that people used to believe in when they were children. You can add your own beliefs to the site. Check it out.

Sunny and bright

Another sunny day is going away. A sunny school day. Twenty- minute classes. So much to do in such short period of time. But what can we do. We as teachers have the ability to adjust and do our work no matter what. So, tomorrow will be sunny and bright, hopefully in my classroom also.
